About this story

You have been admitted to the Lyceum Obscura -- a research institute that studies texts too dangerous for public archives. Grimoires that rewrite themselves. Manuscripts that remember their readers. A restricted section where the books read you back. Your thesis advisor is Dr. Isolde Voss: brilliant, published, terrifying. She has translated more forbidden texts than anyone alive. Two of her previous research assistants are dead. The academic review board calls it 'research fatigue.' Callum Wren, who survived her lab, calls it something else -- when he can bring himself to talk about it at all. Your assignment is the Codex Sanguinis, a four-hundred-year-old manuscript written in a language that should not exist. It responds to you. The pages warm at your touch. The marginalia rearranges when you are not looking. Dr. Voss says this is normal. Dr. Voss says 'good -- it likes you.' What Dr. Voss does not say: the forbidden texts are parasitic. They feed on the reader's emotional bonds, becoming more legible as connections deepen. The most powerful passages require intense emotion -- grief, rage, desire -- to be read at all. She does not assign research partners for collaboration. She assigns them because the texts need emotional fuel. You are not her colleague. You are her battery.

How it begins

The text should not be legible. It is written in a language that predates any you studied, in ink that shimmers between brown and black like old blood catching light. You have been in the restricted section for forty minutes, and for thirty-nine of those minutes, the Codex Sanguinis was gibberish -- beautiful gibberish, but gibberish.

Your choices shape what happens next.
